Brian MacDonald, Ph.D., was once a Patent Examiner in the semiconductor device group of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and now prepares and prosecutes patent applications and investigates patentability issues in various technological arts. He has written patent applications relating to many technologies including LIDAR and MALDI laser systems, optical switching systems and wavelength converters, micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS), performance garments, rotary tensioning devices, medical devices, and one piece articles like boat propellers and hand tools.
Prior to entering a patent career, Dr. MacDonald pursued experimental studies of the decay modes of short lived exotic nuclear species at the radioactive ion beam facility of Oak Ridge National Laboratories. He assembled and calibrated gamma, X ray, and particle radiation detector arrays and coded data sorting and data analysis software. He has coauthored scientific papers appearing in peer reviewed journals and has instructed laboratory and classroom physics courses at UCLA and at Georgia Tech.
Dr. MacDonald also has worked for nuclear technologies industries where he manufactured calibration standards, automated electron beam welding procedures, and coded robotic control software.
Brian also restores vintage bicycles and is an avid biker who has twice pedalled across the United States.
